The Club Today: Awaiting 2015 Finals Results...

In 2014 Red Lion Hockey Club saw 14 teams make grand finals.  The grades that were represented were U11 Girls, U11 Boys (both teams), U13 Girls, U13 Boys (both teams), J2 Girls, J Boys, Masters, A4 Women, A3 Men, A2 Women, A2 Men and A1 Men.

A very successful year!!!!

A Little History:

Hockey was first played in Toowoomba when a group of young ladies assembled in Queens Park in 1927, in response to an advertisement. Interest was aroused in the game, or the girls, by a number of Rover Scouts who lived in the Harristown area. Late in 1928, they started matching their skill with branches cut from wattle trees that grew in the area. Anything that resembled a ball was used and as the nearby dump was full of old jam tins, this was no problem. The game developed and the first men's hockey team was formed - "The Red Lion Club", taking the name from a Harristown local landmark. Warwick Hockey Association invited them to play and the first men's match was between Red Lions and Warwick, at Warwick. This being their first encounter, the Red Lion team turned up in what they thought was correct dress for the game: long white trousers, long white-sleeved shirts with a red tie and sandshoes. It was reported that after their arrival, their faces were also red!

Interest was thus aroused and some skills acquired, other young men started taking up the bent stick, and in 1930 the "Ravens Club" was formed - renamed the "Newtown Hockey Club" three years later.

The Toowoomba Men's Hockey Association was formed in 1931. The first President was Mr T Adamson (founder of the Adamson Cup Competition), Mr L Perry was Secretary-Treasurer, and Mr R Clyde was Selector-Coach. Three teams were affiliated at this formation: Red Lions, Ravens (Newtown) and Valleys. Valleys won the first premiership in 1931, Red Lions the second in 1932.

Many teams have come and gone over the years, Past Tech, 25th Battalion, Telco, Valleys, Chronicle, Southern Cross, Kia Ora, Diggers and All Stars. Of all the original teams, two have remained: Red Lion and Newtown are still active today.

The famous red and white has grown over the years to be Toowoomba's largest club with teams in every grade and even multiple teams in some grades. With training structured by experienced and qualified coaches we ensure that all players reach their potential, whether it be playing local A grade or international.

Our club boasts the longest run of consecutive A grade women's premierships with 7 from '93 until '99 in a total of 21 premierships over the team's history. A history that includes 23 minor-premierships and 32 finals appearances, including the memorable 1976 final in which our clubs second A grade side managed to defeat the first team in the final. The mens A grade side has a rich history as well, including 16 premierships, 22 finals appearances and 9 minor premierships.
